Laboratory Animal Research Center
The Laboratory Animal Research Center (LAC) was founded in 2005 as a core research facility at PKU to provide high quality animal care and services for all research and teaching needs at the university. LAC facilities consist of 6500 square meters of animal holding and support space, housing a variety of non-human primate and rodent species, including 27,000 individually ventilated cages (IVC) in barrier systems housing specified pathogen free (SPF) mice, and over 380 cages for large animals.
With the mission of establishing an internationally qualified animal care and use program, in adding to being fully licensed by national and local animal regulatory authorities, LAC also has been fully accredited by the AAALAC (Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International) since 2008. PKU’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) monitors the animal facility for the care and use of laboratory animals, and all animal protocols must be reviewed and approved by the IACUC before experimental work can begin. The committee also carries out semi-annual reviews of the animal facility’s physical plants and all research protocols conducted within the animal facility.
The experienced LAC veterinary and laboratory animal care staff provides high quality animal care and technical support for the PKU animal research community. LAC also provides various services for biomedical research, including sperm/embryo cryopreservation and rederivation, generation of genetically modified mice, fast colony expansion and strain rescue, antibody production, pathogen analyses, animal model development, and behavioral experiments and analyses.
The LAC serves over 110 laboratories from 11 colleges, schools, and centers at PKU. It currently has approximately 50 staff members, including 5 with Ph.D. degrees and 12 with master’s degrees in Veterinary Medicine and related disciplines.
