Abstract:
Traditionally, research has focused on the discriminative properties of touch that are mediated by large myelinated afferents. In contrast, the role of small-diameter unmyelinated afferents (the so-called CT-afferents) has been studied much less. CT-afferents are receptors in the hairy skin of mammals that respond to light touch, which makes them important in affective touch. The talk will give an overview about investigations into the function of the CT-system, and also address effects of touch on human physiology and behaviour.
